Do it fast and expensive from Bangkok to Ko Tao:
Take a flight straight from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi airport) with Bangkok Airways to Koh Samui (one way USD 120) and then the ferry to Koh Tao. There are around 28 flight a day. Most of the ferries from Koh Samui are going in the morning and there is a ferry at 5 pm from Nathon pier
Do it fast and less expensive from Bangkok to Ko Tao:
Flight to Surat Thani, then bus to pier and ferry to Koh Tao. Surat Thani is south of Koh Tao and mainly serves Koh Samui. Due to flight arrival times and the added time of the ferry journey this route takes longer.
Do it slow and cheap and see a lot of Thailand from Bangkok to Ko Tao:
Bus and ferry from Bangkok to Koh Tao. Lomprayah! They offer a coach service with departure from Bangkok Khao San Road to Chumphon Pier and takes about 8 hours to get to Chumphon. Then transfer to their High Speed Catamaran taking another 1.5 - 2 hours to Koh Tao Mae Haad Pier. So total journey takes about 10 hours. It is an air conditioned bus and high speed ferry, and does offer value for money. For sure you see a lot more than sitting in an airplane.
Do it very slow and very cheap and take the night train from Bangkok to Ko Tao:
Off course you see a bit less of Thailand but you can save a night stay in a hotel or hostel. Take the train from Bangkok to Chumphon. After that bus and ferry to Koh Tao.
